In this post, I’d like to introduce four pieces that have been upcycled from a single vintage Nagoya obi.
Rikyu bag, 2-way clutch bag, half-moon-shaped rosary case, zipped accessory pouch.
Originally a single obi sash, it has been transformed - changing shape along the way - into a small accessory that can be worn on its own in modern life.
The obi features a striking, vibrant red ‘kumadori’ pattern against a white background.
Among them are seasonal flowers such as peonies and chrysanthemums, as well as auspicious motifs, all depicted with a delicate blend of embroidery and gold leaf.
It is a nostalgic and bold colour scheme so beautiful it takes your breath away.
The vivid contrasts created by the interplay of red, white and gold evoke the glamorous colour palette of the Taishō Romantic era, whilst also capturing the charm of the dynamic costumes that were popular into the early Shōwa period.
For the women of that era, such splendid and luxurious obi must have served not only to adorn their attire but also to allow them to savour the aesthetic sensibilities unique to that period. What particularly captivates me is the three-dimensional effect created by the plump, hand-embroidered stitches.
The subtle shades created by each individual thread, and the sparkle of the gold leaf as it catches the light. Far from being a flat design, it possesses a rich expressiveness that draws you deeper into its beauty the longer you gaze at it. We have crafted this precious obi in such a way that you can enjoy it in your everyday life whilst preserving as much of its charm as possible.
